Out of Darkness

Yesterday we finished reading Out of Darkness, the story of Louis Braille's life and accomplishments. Today, we looked at some books with Braille, a Brailler and some tools used by those who are visually impaired.

A French book with Braille pages. The animals have fabric added to make it interesting to feel.

The copy of the Mouse and the Motorcycle that we read, and the same book in Braille. It takes 2 volumes! Braille takes up more space, and it can only be printed on one side of the page.

A geography book. The map of Canada is raised on the plastic page to the outline of the country can be felt.

A Perkins Brailler. Mme is going to try to figure out how to use it so we can write our names in Braille to take home. Each of the three keys on either side of the middle key makes one of the 6 dots in the Braille cell. To make a character with all six dots, you press down all six keys at once.
A guide for writing a signature on a cheque and a Braille ruler.
