February Break

Reminder that there is NO SCHOOL all week - we resume on Monday, February 27th.

I hope everyone has a safe and fun holiday!

Friday Feb17th

What a fun way to start our February break! Skating was a huge success - we were so lucky to have such a nice morning, as well as so many great parents and grandparents who were able to come and help us out. Thank you!

In your childs agenda there are two homework notes, In Motion and Les solides 3D.
The In Motion committee here at school has come up with an incentive to help families and students stay active over the break. Students were sent home with an orange paper on Thursday (if it didn't make it home, just keep track on a separate paper) to tally physical activity. Students are to write what activity they did, and how long they did it for each day (minimum of 5 minutes). Students can bring back their calendars on Monday, Feb 27th to be entered into a draw for a chance to win a prize.

The other piece of homework (Les solides 3D) is for a project we will be working on in the weeks we return to school. Students are asked to bring in boxes and containers (3D solids) that we can use to build a 3D community.

Thanks!

What a week!

This week seems to be flying by...

We had a lovely Valentine's Day yesterday- we decorated our bags to collect our valentines, passed them out and enjoyed some treats.

Today we had a fun math class. We have been learning about shapes and have now started 3D objects. Today we made 3D objects using mini-marshmallows and spaghetti. We made cubes, and prisms, and pyramids - oh my! Tomorrow we are going to look at our objects and figure out how many sommets (corners) and aretes (edges)  and faces (faces) our objects have.

A few reminders and updates about what's happening this week:

  • Thursday morning we will be going to an assembly that will be Blues in the Schools. The link here (Saskatoon Blues Society) has more information - I am unsure which of the presenters we will get to see.
  • Friday morning we are going skating! There is a note going home today - please send back the bottom portion so I know who we will need to find equipment for (the school has helmets, and some skates). Also, if you wish to join us, please let me know.
  • Friday we will be having our dictee the words for this week are as follows:
un cercle, un garçon, les écailles, une racine, la carapace, le ciel, le balcon, le français, le cou, dans la lune

On trie les formes

Today in math we were sorting shapes, in the same way that we sort our MIMI words. We played a little game first, and then worked with our groups to sort the shapes we were given. The link below is for the game on the computer.

Je trie les formes

We also sorted our MIMI words into groups today, did stations, had library time, and finished reading our Canadian Flyers Adventure book about the Underground Railroad. What a day!

Black History Month

As mentioned before, February is Black History Month. On Friday, we read Henry's Freedom Box, a story about a slave who mailed himself to Philadelphia, where there was no slavery. Today, we have started reading a Canadian Flyer Adventure book entitled Hurry Freedom, about the Underground Railroad.
Students have been very surprised and appalled to hear about the existance of slavery, and how the slaves were treated.

A few things from last week...

I am falling behind in my posting...
Here are some updates on what we have been working on lately.

Math - We have been studying patterns (les suites). We started with shapes and patterns that have a motif (part that repeats), and we finished by looking at patterns in numbers that continue to increase. We learned about some old mathematicians, including Blaise Pascal (he was French!) and his triangle, and Fibonacci and his number pattern and how we find it in nature.

Students repeating pattern

Student increasing pattern

We looked at flowers, pinecones and cauliflowers and saw the spirals that show Fibonacci's numbers.

We began our unit on les formes today.

Social studies - We have been discussing communities and interdependence. Our project from last week was to work in our groups and create a map of a community and all of the places we would find in a community.

Shining Willow Award Books

Today we read the last of the Shining Willow Award books:
This book was a great way to start February, as February is Black History Month. We will be reading more stories like Viola's, and learning more about Black History.

Because this was the last book, today we voted on which book we thought should win the award. To do this we each wrote our favourite down on a piece of paper, and Mme put them into a Wordle so we could see which book won.
The King's Taster was our big winner with 8 votes, closely followed by Viola Desmond Won't Be Budged (7 votes) and In Front of My House (6 votes).
